This year's Graduate Case Seminar was held in Galveston, Texas, and was hosted by the ΒΑΨ Chapter at the University of Houston - Clear Lake. On Friday, January 12, 2001, 37 participants and two guests stepped off various airplanes and into shuttle vans for their 45-minute trip to the San Luis Resort.
The events started on Friday night at 7pm with a mixer; afterwards, various social options were presented. Saturday morning began with continental breakfast followed by a two-part program. During the morning program, Deloitte & Touche Manager Philip Hilsher split the participants into groups to discuss ΒΑΨ graduate student issues. The participants later reconvened into a plenary session where lists of issues were developed. Attendees then broke into groups formed by the topic they wanted to develop. Recommendations from these groups were then made to ΒΑΨ National President Diane Pattison.
The afternoon program was presented by Ed Altamus, and was a small-group simulated survival game. Participants were told they survived a plane crash in the desert. Each group was to rank a list of 15 items in order of importance, first individually and then as a team. The individual scores were compared to the team score to determine the impact of teamwork that took place. Individual and group scores were then compared to expert scores. All agreed the simulation was eye opening.
Friday night a banquet was held at Landrey's Seafood Restaurant and the bonding process continued.
Sunday morning was the time for goodbyes. All students looked back with fond regret in their eyes as this idyllic time had come to an end. The remaining volunteers had two sets of emotions: happy that the six months of hard work had come to a close, but sad that our newfound friends had departed.
