In support of individual research and writing projects for student members, Beta Alpha Psi sponsors two manuscript contests: one for undergraduate students and the other for graduate students. Each chapter is permitted to submit a maximum of four papers for the competitions.

Student papers were initially screened for compliance with the rules of the specific contest. Acceptable papers were evaluated by designated members of the National Council.

In addition to being recognized as a Literary or Research Scholar, the author of the first place manuscript in each competition receives (1) a plaque, (2) a $750 cash prize, and (3) an all expenses paid trip to the 1997-98 annual meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. Second and third place papers are awarded $500 and $250, respectively. The funding for these awards is provided by the Beta Alpha Psi Associates. First place manuscripts will be published in the JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION.

UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS
For the year 1997-98 the undergraduate topic was "The impact Technology is having on the accounting profession." Members from chapters entered manuscripts in the undergraduate competition. The winners were selected by a faculty screening committee consisting of National Council members: George Minmier, Diane Pattison, Mary Alice Seville, Keith Smith, Gadis Dillon and Joyce Frakes.

ACAUS INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING AWARDS

	The Association of Chartered Accountants in the U.S. (ACAUS) is a professional not-for-profit organization representing the interests of 4,000 U.S.-based Chartered Accountants from institutes in Australia, Canada, England and Wales, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland and South Africa. One of the goals of ACAUS is to encourage U.S.-based education and research on international accountancy issues. As one of several programs underway to accomplish this goal, ACAUS offers two awards to members of Beta Alpha Psi for research excellence in international accounting and business. The Chartered Accountants’ International Accounting Awards program comprises (1) the $1,000 Open Award (not awarded this year) and (2) the $500 Restricted Award. The Open Award is given for a proposal relating to a current topic in international accounting or business. Half the award will be given to the author(s) whose proposal is selected. At completion of the project the author(s) will receive the balance of the award. Winners of the Restricted Award are also selected on the basis of a paper relating to a current topic in international accounting or business. The full award is given to the author(s) upon selection by the judges.
