1998
Graduate Case Seminar

Texas A&M University

The Delta Iota chapter from Texas A&M University hosted the 1998 Beta Alpha Psi Graduate Case Seminar spring ‘98 in College Station, TX. The Seminar brings together graduate accounting students from Beta Alpha Psi chapters across the country to discuss a variety of issues in taxation, financial reporting, and ethics. Each chapter is asked to send only one graduate member, so with over sixty participants there were students from every corner of the country.

Events began on Friday, January 16 with a dinner buffet followed by a stunning performance by the Texas Aggie Wranglers county western dance team. They also attempted to teach everyone the two-step, which resulted in a good time and a lot of laughs.

Saturday began with a tour of the recently completed George Bush Presidential Library on the campus of Texas A&M. The library is an interesting and informative tribute to our 41st president, and a must see if you’re in the area. A plenary session with Larry Bello, a KPMG partner from Houston, began with a discussion on "Financial Reporting in the 21st Century". Participants also discussed several ethical situations through the use of a video series produced by Arthur Andersen LLP and led by Dr. Stanley Kratchman. After lunch students broke into groups to discuss the case studies that had been mailed to the participants last fall. The afternoon concluded with a banquet at the College Station. Following the banquet many of the students had an opportunity to explore the local area around the campus and experience a local favorite hang out — the Dixie Chicken — specializing in sawdust floors and animal head trophies on the walls.

The 1998 Graduate Case Seminar was an enjoyable learning experience. It was really interesting to meet such a variety of Beta Alpha Psi members from all over the country. Next year’s seminar is sure to be fun and informative. Many thanks to the members of the Delta Iota Chapter who helped make this year’s event such a great success.
