Recommendations for Chapter Bylaws Last updated: September 22, 2004
Article 1: Name of the organization
[Example:
The name of this organization shall be the Zeta Tau Chapter of Beta
Alpha Psi at the Lamar University of Beaumont, TexasTexas.]
Article 2: The objectives and purposes of the chapter
Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary honors organization for accounting, finance and information systems majors. Its stated purpose includes recognizing scholastic and professional excellence in the fields of accounting, finance, or information systems with the provision of opportunities for self-development and association among members and practicing business professionals; and encouragement of a sense of ethical, social, and public responsibility. [Add the objectives of the local chapter.]
Article 3: Membership
Requirements for membership in the chapter [The chapter may set higher standards than the International Bylaws but may not set lower standards. The membership requirements are commonly presented in separate sections for undergraduate student members, graduate student members, faculty members, honorary members, and alumni members.]
Requirements for entering into and satisfactorily completing pledge status. Membership fees and continuing dues, if any [what they will be or how they will be determined].
Method for termination of membership by action of a member or by action of the chapter.
Article 4: Meetings for the conduct of business
Actions requiring vote of the entire membership. Who may vote? [Pledges
are normally not permitted to vote on most matters. Honorary and alumnus
members are not permitted to vote.]
Required notice of meeting and agenda. How many or what percentage of
the membership constitutes a quorum (minimum attendance to conduct business)?
[Examples
used by current chapters include 25% of membership, 50% of membership,
2/3 of membership, and a number equal to the membership of the executive
committee.]
State what, if any, actions require more than a simple majority of members
present and voting in order to pass. May persons vote by proxy? [Generally
this is not allowed.]
Actions requiring vote of the executive committee [see
International bylaws article
XIV, section 9].
Composition of the executive committee [normally
this would include the chapter officers, excluding the internal auditor,
and the faculty advisor. It may also include committee chairs and others
as deemed appropriate by the chapter.]
Required notice of meeting and agenda. How many or what percentage of
the membership of the executive committee constitute a quorum (minimum
attendance to conduct business)? [Commonly
a quorum is any number exceeding 50% of the membership of the executive
committee.]

Article 5: Student officers
Titles and duties of officers. [Example:
The reporter shall: (A) Prepare and submit all reports as required by
Beta Alpha Psi including reports of chapter activity, reports of initiations,
and reports of any change in faculty advisor or student officers; (B)Prepare
and send to the Executive Office such correspondence as is required
for the ongoing activities of the chapter; Maintain a file of correspondence
as appropriate; and (D) Perform such as other duties as may be assigned
by the executive committee or president of the chapter.]
[Chapter
offices normally include a president, vice-president, treasurer, recording
secretary, and reporter.]
How are officers elected by the chapter. [Consider
how the nomination process should work. How should the election process
work? When should elections take place? Who is eligible to be a candidate?]
Term of office. [When
annual terms are used they most commonly begin on April 1 but other
chapters use May 1, June 1, or January 1. Some chapters change officers
each academic term.]
Method of resignation.
Method of removal.
How vacancies are filled.
Article 6: Faculty advisor
Method for selection of faculty advisor and duties of office. [New
faculty advisors are normally selected by vote of the membership based
on recommendations from the outgoing faculty advisor and the accounting,
finance or IS department chair(s).] [Example of statement of duties:
The faculty advisor shall:(A) Provide counsel and assistance to the
chapter, its officers, its executive committee, and other committees;
(B)Verify the appropriateness of the content of reports submitted to
the Executive Office; Serve as liaison with the Executive Office; (D)
Serve as liaison with the administration of the university, school/college
of business, and department of accounting, finance or IS; and (E) Assure
continuity of the chapter.]
Article 7: Committees other than the executive committee
List the committees and the duties of each. State how membership and length of service is determined (The internal audit committee should be considered here if your chapter revenues exceed $25K annually. Other committees commonly include an initiation banquet committee, newsletter committee, meet-the-firms night committee, etc.)
Article 8: Fiscal year
The fiscal year of the chapter will end on April 30.
Article 9: Authority
These bylaws shall be the principal governing document of the _______________ Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi.
These bylaws will be subordinate to the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi. Any provision of this document that conflicts with the International Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi that is currently in effect will be rendered null and void.
Article 10: Requirements for amendment to the bylaws
[While some
chapters require only a majority vote of the entire membership, many
chapters require 2/3 or 3/4 of the membership to cast an affirmative
vote in order for an amendment to the bylaws to pass so as to avoid
an over- reaction to an unusual event.]
NOTE: In establishing local chapter bylaws, refer to the International
Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Alpha Psi for examples and to assure
that there is no conflict between the chapter bylaws and those of Beta
Alpha Psi. .
