Nancy Nichols (2007 – 2010)

Nancy B. Nichols is an Associate Professor and the Deloitte Faculty Fellow at James Madison University.  She also serves as the Director of the masters in accounting program.  Nancy began her academic career at JMU in 1997 after receiving her PhD from the University of North Texas.  Prior to obtaining her PhD, she was a tax partner at Deloitte and Touche.  Nancy teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in taxation.

Professor Nichols’ research interests are primarily in the areas of taxation and segment reporting.  She has published numerous articles in such journals as the Journal of the American Taxation Association, Journal of Legal Tax Research, Accounting Horizons, Journal of International Accounting Research, Journal of International Accounting, Auditing and Taxation, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, and Tax Notes.

Nancy is an active member of the American Taxation Association, currently serving as treasurer and newsletter editor.  She previously served on the Beta Alpha Psi Board as Director of Chapter Activities from 2003-2006 and was chapter advisor for the JMU Chapter from 1998 to 2003.

Nancy is married with two children. Continuing the family tradition, her son is currently a Beta Alpha Psi member at Virginia Tech.

Andrew Bailey(2007 – 2010)

Andrew D. Bailey was appointed Senior Policy Advisor to the Grant Thornton National Public Policy and Strategy Group in September 2006.

From January 2004 to December 2005, Dr. Bailey was a Senior Officer of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), serving as the Deputy Chief Accountant in the Commission’s Office of the Chief Accountant. In this capacity, Dr. Bailey managed the day-to-day operations of the office, overseeing the accounting aspects of the resolution of registrant issues, rulemaking projects and private sector standard-setting efforts. Earlier, from August 2000 to July 2001, Dr. Bailey had served as an Academic Accounting Fellow in the SEC Office of the Chief Accountant.

Professor Bailey spent a long and distinguished career in academia, with numerous visiting professorships abroad, and culminating with his being named Emeritus Professor of Accountancy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

He was the Ernst & Young Distinguished Professor of Accountancy and Head of the Department of Accountancy, University of Illinois, from Autumn 1994 to Summer 1997.  He has also held the position of Director of the Zimmerman Center for International Education and Research in Accounting and Editor of The International Journal of Accounting (TIJA).  Earlier, he was the Deloitte & Touche Professor of Accounting and Head of the Department of Accounting at The University of Arizona. He has also been a faculty member at the Universities of Maine, Minnesota (Department Chair), Iowa, Purdue, and The Ohio State University (Arthur Young Professor of Accounting).  He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia, The Otago University in New Zealand, The Norwegian Graduate School of Management in Oslo, Norway, and Groupe Ècole Superieure de Commerce de Paris (ESCP) in Paris, France.

Dr. Bailey earned two degrees at the University of Minnesota, B.S.B. and M.S. in accounting, before earning his Ph.D. in accounting at The Ohio State University in 1971. Formerly with Touche Ross & Co., he is a CPA, CIA, CMA and CFE. He is a Past President of the American Accounting Association and Past Chairman of the Auditing section of the AAA. He has served as co editor of Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Associate Editor of The Accounting Review and The Journal of Information Systems and has served on numerous academic journal review boards. He is a member of the Rho Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi and was the national Beta Alpha Psi Accountant of the Year (Educator), 1996, and has been named among the top 100 most influential people in accounting. His research interests include a broad range of auditing and professional issues, including auditing in a computerized environment.

 

Stephanie Bryant (2006 – 2009)

Dr. Stephanie M. Bryant holds the Dan R. and Tina P. Johnson Distinguished Professorship in Accounting at the University of South Florida, where she specializes in accounting information systems. She earned her doctorate in Accounting at Louisiana State University in 1996. Dr. Bryant teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in consulting and accounting information systems, and previously worked for KPMG.  Dr. Bryant has published over 20 articles in referred journals.  Additionally, she has co-authored two accounting textbooks, Core Concepts of Consulting for Accountants, and Core Concepts of Information Technology Audit, published recently.  She has won numerous teaching awards, including the 2002/2003 USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.  In 2003, Dr. Bryant received the USF President’s Award for Faculty Excellence. 

Dr. Bryant is active in the Information Systems Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA-IS), having chaired numerous committees over the years.  In 2005 she was elected President-Elect, and in 2006 served as national president of the AAA-IS section, traveling to Ireland and China representing the IS Section internationally.  Additionally, in 2002 Dr. Bryant was elected to the International Board of Directors of Beta Alpha Psi, serving a three-year term as the Director of the Southeast Region.  In 2004 and 2005 Dr. Bryant was one of two people in accounting information systems selected to serve on the AAA New Faculty Consortium Committee.  In this capacity, she assists in planning and conducting sessions at the annual New Faculty Consortium, sponsored by Ernst & Young. 

Dr. Bryant makes her home in Tampa, with her husband of 28 years, Gary.

Brian McGuire (2005-2008)

BRIAN L. McGUIRE is the Associate Dean, MBA Director, and Professor of Accounting at the University of Southern Indiana. He has a B.S. from the University of South Alabama, an MBA from the University of South Alabama, and a Ph.D. from the University of Central Florida (major field of concentration in accounting, with additional emphasis in information systems). He is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant, a Certified Business Manager, and a Certified Information Technology Professional, and he has professional experience in both public and corporate accounting. He has served as an Administrator of a medical center, Director of Corporate Operations of a hospital holding company, and as a consultant in the health care field. In addition, he has consulted numerous medical groups in the areas of accounting, reimbursement, fee schedules, information systems, and office administration. He has also served as a consultant in several other areas, including an Activity-Based Costing Implementation Project, a High Technology Assessment Project, a Community Development Financial Institution Project, and most recently, as an expert witness in a Superior Court case.

His dissertation, An Empirical Study of User Satisfaction with Accounting Information Systems in a Healthcare Environment, combined his interests in information systems and health services administration. While completing his doctorate, he worked in the Intelligent Multimedia Applications Laboratory (IMAL) at the University of Central Florida, which was a project (funded by NASA) that integrated artificial intelligence (expert systems) with multimedia applications.

Dr. McGuire’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of cost accounting, health care administration, and accounting information systems. His research has been published in numerous journals, including Strategic Finance, Management Accounting Quarterly, and the Journal of Cost Management, and he has received numerous research awards, including the 2007 “Lybrand Silver Medal" (Strategic Finance and Management Accounting Quarterly’s annual manuscript competition), and a 2001 and a 2002 “Lybrand Certificate of Merit” (given for excellence in contributing to the literature for the advancement of management accounting). He also received an “Articles of Merit Award,” International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) 2007 Articles of Merit (given for previously published international articles, selected by IFAC's Professional Accountants in Business Committee, which address topics that can assist professional accountants in business with their management, strategic and financial decision-making issues). In addition, he has received numerous “Best Paper Awards” at national and international academic conferences, and he has made numerous presentations at national and international professional meetings. Furthermore, he received three (1999, 2001, and 2003) “USI College of Business’ Faculty Award for Service” (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in service), the 2001 “USI College of Business’ Faculty Award for Research,” (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in research), and the 2005 “USI College of Business’ Faculty Award for Teaching,” (given annually to the faculty member that most exemplifies excellence in teaching).

He has served on several international boards, including the Board of Directors of the Institute of Management Accountants and the Board of Regents of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.  He also serves on numerous charitable and not-for-profit boards, and is currently the President of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra (EPO), a multi-million dollar orchestra and largest arts institution in the Indiana/Illinois/Kentucky Tri-State Area (founded in 1934).  In addition, he has served on several committees and task forces of various academic and professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the American Accounting Association.  Furthermore, he is a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Phi Kappa Phi honorary organizations.

 

Paulette Tandy (2006–2009)

Dr. Paulette Tandy is the Chair of the Department of Accounting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She has been at UNLV since obtaining her Ph.D. at Texas A&M University. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she primarily teaches in the auditing area, both external and internal auditing. She has always enjoyed classroom interactions and curriculum innovation and has won numerous teaching excellence awards, including two university-wide awards.

Dr. Tandy's research interests lie in the areas of auditing, accounting education, and the accounting standard-setting process. She has published in a variety of academic and professional journals.

In addition to teaching and research, she enjoys interaction with accounting students, and she served as advisor to the UNLV Beta Alpha Psi for ten years, leading the chapter to Superior Award status every year. She is an active member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, serving on the Board of Governors for the local chapter, and acting as a liaison between the organization and the accounting students.

Her husband (the other Dr. Tandy) is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at UNLV and their two children are both college students.

Denny Reigle

In January 2007, Denny joined the AICPA as its Director - Academic & Career Development. Formerly, Denny was Managing Partner, Partner Matters and Human Resources-North America at Arthur Andersen LLP prior to electing early retirement on August 31, 2001.  He was also responsible for Recruiting and University Relations, served as Trustee and Secretary of the Arthur Andersen Foundation, and chaired the Investment Committee for pension and profit sharing plans.

Denny joined the New York office of Arthur Andersen in 1977, with prior experience in higher education, government and philanthropic foundations.  As a member of the American Accounting Association, he formerly served on the Executive Committee as Vice President (Practice), as well as on the New Faculty Consortium Committee and the Accounting Program Leadership Group.  He was also an active committee and/or board member of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy, the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business, and the American Institute of CPAs where he served on the Academic and Career Development Executive Committee.  He also served on the National Advisory Forum and as President of Beta Alpha Psi.

Denny is a member of the board of trustees of numerous educational organizations, including the Graduate Management Admission Council, where he is Chairman, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the Wake Forest Calloway School Board of Visitors (former Chairman), and is former Board Chairman of AIESEC-US, Inc.  He was an honorary member of the National Council of INROADS, Inc., a not-for-profit career development organization for minority students, and is currently a member of the Dominican University School of Business Board of Advisors.

Denny was inducted into the National Association of Colleges & Employers’ Academy of NACE Fellows, recognizing contributions to the career planning, placement, and recruitment profession through leadership, the advancement of knowledge, or excellence in professional practice.  He was the first corporate member so honored.  He also was awarded the Federation of Schools of Accountancy Practitioner Service Award (twice), recognizing his efforts on the behalf of post-baccalaureate accounting education.

Denny has a BA in liberal arts from the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business.  He is married and has two daughters.  Memberships include the Harvard Club of New York, The TPC at Jasna Polana in Princeton, New Jersey, and the Cliffs at Glassy, South Carolina.

Blane Ruschak (2003-2008)

Blane attended Rutgers College in New Jersey and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Economics in 1980. He subsequently attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he received a Masters in Accounting degree in 1982. After graduation, he began his career in the audit department of the KPMG Honolulu office where he serviced clients in the healthcare, non profit, real estate, agribusiness and hospitality industries. From 1988-1989, he participated in a 2 year rotational program in KPMG’s national training center in Montvale New Jersey where he was responsible for the development and instruction of numerous KPMG assurance courses.  Upon his return to the Honolulu office, Blane assumed the responsibility of Primary Recruiter for the office in addition to servicing his assurance clients in the hospital and hospitality industries. In 1994, Blane transferred to the KPMG Long Beach office to assist with the Southern California Health care assurance and consulting practice.  In 1997, Blane transferred to the Los Angeles office where he assumed the Director of College Recruiting position for the Pacific Southwest  area where he was responsible for the hiring of all entry level Assurance and Tax department personnel.  In 2000, Blane assumed the role of National Director of Campus Recruiting as part of the KPMG National Recruiting team in Montvale, New Jersey. In 2008, Blane assumed the role of Executive Director for Campus Recruiting and University Relations.

His current role includes serving as the KPMG member and incoming Chair on the Beta Alpha Psi Advisory Forum, serving on the Board of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA), serving as a member of the Association of Campus Recruiting Executives, serving on the Board of the Education Foundation for Woman in Accounting, serving on the AICPA Pre-certification Executive Education Committee (PcEEC)  and formerly served on the Accounting Program Leadership Group (APLG) Board of Directors. He recently relocated to Charleston, South Carolina and works out of the Montvale, New Jersey National Office as part of the National Human Resource team.

Mark Higgins (2005-2008)

Mark is the Dean and The Alfred J. Verrecchia-Hasbro Inc. Leadership Chair in Business at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee and is a CPA. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Accounting from the University of South Carolina. During his tenure at URI, he served as the Director of the Masters in Accounting Program from 1994-2004 and as the Area Coordinator in Accounting from 2002-2004. From 2004-2006 he served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. Prior to his tenure at URI, he was a Tax Manager for Ernst and Young (formerly Arthur Young) in New York City. He is currently President of the American Taxation Association having previously served as Secretary, Vice-President, and President-Elect. Mark currently serves on the Executive Committee of the American Accounting Association as Vice President for Sections and Regions. He previously served on the Finance Committee and chaired the Membership Committee. In addition, he served two four-year terms on the Northeast Region Steering Committee and has twice served as the Program Chair and as President of the Northeast Region. In 2006, he was elected into the American Accounting Association Northeast Region Hall of Fame.

He is the co-author with Kevin Murphy of Concepts in Taxation which is in its 14th edition. His research has been published in the Journal of Accounting Education, Critical Perspectives in Accounting, The Accounting Historians Journal, Advances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum Innovations, The CPA Journal, Practical Tax Strategies, The Tax Adviser, and Tax Notes. His research has been featured in The Boston Globe and The Providence Journal where he also serves as a technical consultant to Neil Downing’s, “Moneyline” column.

Patricia M. Poli, CPA, Ph.D.

Dr. Patricia M. Poli is Associate Professor of Accounting at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. She earned her BS in accounting from the University of Connecticut and her Ph.D. in accounting at New York University. She is a licensed CPA in the state of Connecticut.

Pat is currently a member of the AICPA council and is a past president of the Connecticut Society of CPAs. She served as advisor to the Iota Psi Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi from 2003-2007. Pat is also a member of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and serves as the chair of the strategic planning committee of the AAA’s International Accounting Section.

Pat teaches the introduction to financial accounting and the graduate international accounting courses, and she also teaches international business in the International Studies Program. Her research interests include international financial accounting issues.

Suzanne McCaffrey (2005-2008)

Suzanne McCaffrey attended the University of Maryland and received a Bachelor’s of Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting.  Soon after December’s graduation, she started work with Arthur Young & Co. in Washington, D.C., who, of course, later merged to become Ernst & Young. After working three years in the public arena, she moved to Mississippi.

During the next few years, she worked at the University of Mississippi doing internal audit work, departmental accounting, contract & grant accounting, and a campus-wide re-engineering/information technology project. In addition, during this time she attended graduate school and received her Masters of Accountancy degree.

After working one year off campus, she accepted an instructor position in the Patterson School of Accountancy to begin teaching Fall 2000.  In Fall 2002, Suzanne began work as Faculty Advisor for Beta Alpha Psi.  In keeping with her plans to become more involved in BAP, the Ole Miss chapter hosted the 2007 regional meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

Her husband, Dr. David McCaffrey, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Administration at the School of Pharmacy at the University.  She has three children who try her patience on a daily basis, help keep her organized, have helped her become a soccer mom and who carry around a piece of her heart wherever they go.

 

Roann Kopel (2006-2009)

Dr. Roann Kopel is a Professor of Accountancy at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.  She earned her Ph. D. in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina in 1986 and her Master’s of Economics from North Carolina State.  Professor Kopel currently studies issues in financial accounting and accounting pedagogy.  Her research in these areas has been published in journals such as Advances in Accounting Education and the Journal of Accounting and Finance Research.

Roann is a leader in activities to integrate students into the accounting profession.  She guided the EIU Beta Alpha Psi honorary organization to its installation in February of 1997 and, as faculty advisor, guided the chapter to “Superior Chapter” status every year since.  In 2004, Roann was awarded the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Advisor Award.  Also, in 2004, she also was awarded the Illinois CPA Society Distinguished Service Award for her work with the Student Outreach Task Force, a group focusing on recruiting high school students and freshmen and sophomore college students into the accounting major. 

Roann is a leader in accounting education.  In addition to numerous teaching excellence awards at both the University and at the School of Business level at Eastern Illinois University, Roann recently was honored with the prestigious 2006 Illinois CPA Society “Outstanding Accounting Educator Award.”  Her more recent educational endeavors have involved international programs, international students, and study abroad.  In this capacity, she worked to initiate and teach in a program that takes EIU students through coursework conducted in the Netherlands.

Lu Montondon (2007-2010)

Dr. Lu Montondon is a Professor of Accounting at the McCoy College of Business, Texas State University-San Marcos. She was inducted into Beta Alpha Psi as a graduate student at the University of Houston where she earned an MBA and PhD. Current research interests are governmental accounting and accounting education.

Lu joined Texas State University San Marcos faculty in 1989.  She guided the students through the petitioning process beginning in 1998. Since then, the chapter has been recognized as a superior chapter every year, including during that last year as a petitioning chapter. In 2006, she was awarded the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award.

Dr. Montondon has served as faculty advisor to the Texas State University Accounting Club and the Golden Key International Honor Society.  Her service activities include serving as bursar for the San Marcos Habitat for Humanity, co-president of the San Marcos League of Women Voters and president of the Advancement for Women in Higher Education. She has received awards for outstanding teaching and service by the McCoy College and an outstanding advisor award from Texas State University.

Amy An (2006-2009)

Amy An teaches taxation at The University of Iowa.  Prior to joining academia, Amy worked as a business writing instructor for the Canadian Department of National Defense and as a tax consultant for Arthur Andersen.

Amy served as faculty advisor of the Beta Alpha Psi Alpha Pi Chapter from 1995 to 2005.  She was recognized as a Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Faculty Advisor in 2001 and co-chaired the 2004 Beta Alpha Psi Annual Meeting.  Amy is a member of the AICPA and the Iowa Society of CPAs.

Amy holds a B.A. Honors in French from the University of British Columbia and a M.A. in Accounting from The University of Iowa.

Sharon Lightner ( 2008-2010 )

Dr. Sharon M. Lightner teaches in the School of Accountancy at SDSU. Her primary teaching area is financial accounting. She is a three time recipient of the Most Outstanding Faculty Award in the School of Accountancy and has been selected the Most Influential Professor by the Most Outstanding Accounting Student on three separate occasions.

Dr. Lightner is very involved with Beta Alpha Psi , the national accounting honors organization. She serves as faculty advisor to the Beta Eta Chapter at SDSU. She received the 1996-1997 Aztec Achievement Award at SDSU for the outstanding faculty advisor on campus and was selected as one of the six Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisors nation wide to receive a 1995-1996 Arthur Andersen Richard E. Claire Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award.

Her degrees include a Bachelor of Science from the University of Montana, a Master of Science from San Diego State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oregon.

Emelissa Baluyot (2007-2009)

Alumni Representative Emelissa Baluyot is a client-serving professional for Deloitte & Touche, LLP in its Assurance & Enterprise Risk Services (AERS) group in Seattle, Washington. Emelissa graduated from Seattle University in 2005 with her undergraduate degree in accounting and then received her Masters in Professional Accounting (MPAcc) from the University of Washington in 2006.

Emelissa pledged the Seattle University Delta Eta Chapter in the Fall of 2003 and later served as President in 2004-2005. During her membership at Seattle University, she participated in both regional and national activities. In 2004 she presented at the Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida and received 2nd place for a case she prepared at the Thomas J. Burns undergraduate case seminar. In 2005 she led the planning of a campus-wide ethics competition which she and her team presented at the 2005 Annual Convention and received the 1st place National Best Practices award. Additionally, in 2006 Emelissa was on the planning committee for the NW Regional Conference and coordinated the Best Practices competition.

In addition to Beta Alpha Psi, Emelissa also holds membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and is a licensed CPA in the state of Washington. She is also an active member of the Junior League of Seattle, a mentor to accounting students at the UW and SU, and a member of the UW MPAcc Advisory & Assurance alumni board. Emelissa believes that BAP has the opportunity to have a positive impact on thousands of students’ academic and professional careers. Brad Schultz (2008-2010)

Alumni Representative Brad Schultz is an auditor for Ernst & Young, LLP in the Assurance & Advisory Business Services line of the Salt Lake City office. His focus is in the financial services industry. Brad graduated from Weber State University (WSU) with his undergraduate degree in accounting and Spanish in 2007, and then received his Masters of Accountancy from Utah State University (USU) in 2008. He received the Federation of Schools of Accountancy Outstanding Graduate Scholar Award in 2008, and was the WSU Outstanding Student of the Year in both the School of Business and the College of Arts and Humanities in 2007.

Brad pledged the WSU Theta Tau Chapter in the spring of 2005, and served as the chapter’s Treasurer for the following two academic years. Brad worked hard at WSU to increase student involvement and to coordinate BAP activities with other student organizations in the School of Business. Brad continued his membership at USU in the Delta Omega Chapter, where he served as Reporting Secretary for the 2007-2008 academic year. He worked with other officers in this chapter to initiate an affiliate program for younger accounting students that led to increased activity in the chapter.

Brad is also an affiliate member of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA) and is working towards his CPA certification. Brad values the positive impact that BAP has had in his academic and professional careers. He has enjoyed the many regional and national meetings that he has attended, and has made many lasting friendships through BAP. He looks forward to serving on the Board and seeing the organization continue to grow both nationally and across borders.
