Leadership Activity
Beta Omicron Chapter
University of Arizona
Saturday, September 12th, 1998, the Beta Omicron Chapter at the University of Arizona hosted a Leadership Activity with various presentations addressing the development of leadership skills. Professionals participating included Sarah Blake and Cindy Marshall of the Arizona State Society of CPA's and Brett Goddard and Steve Byrne of Accounting Quest.
Sarah Blake spoke on the value of networking through professional organizations and their benefits in developing leadership skills. Cindy Marshall delivered a presentation on effective communication and the value of good listening skills. Included in her presentation were what she referred to as "The 4 C's": confidence, creativity, caring, and consideration. Ms. Marshall saw these as the best methods a leader can use of conveying an important message. Ms. Marshall also spoke about the value of feedback from peers and associates in developing leadership traits. Mr. Goddard and Mr. Byrne spoke about the value of presentation of oneself, both in writing and in speech delivery.
The activity was a good learning experience for our members who have not yet participated in coursework involving verbal speech delivery. The connection between public speaking and leadership is strong. An effective leader is one who can deliver a message and be receptive to feedback.
