Durham, N.C. – The Outstanding Dean Award was presented to Dr. Mary Gowan at the Beta Alpha Psi Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA on August 6, 2017. The award recognizes deans for their significant contribution in faculty support and/or financial support to helping achieve the goals and objectives of their university’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter.

Gowan has served as dean at James Madison University (JMU) for four years. Prior to this role, she’s held a significant history of experience in academia, including a dean at Elon University, an associate dean at George Washington University, and faculty positions at universities in the U.S. and abroad.

In her role, she has committed herself diligently to supporting faculty, staff, and students. Immediately after joining JMU’s College of Business she conducted a deep dive analysis of the needs concerning student organizations on campus. Subsequently, she implemented a plan to use differential tuition funds of over $2.5 million to support student and faculty initiatives.

Gowan has been exceedingly supportive of the Eta Delta chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, often recognizing the chapter’s influence in the business community on campus. Furthermore, the chapter has greatly benefited from her program and has used the additional funds to increase member value.

In reflecting upon her own dedication and strong support for student organizations, Dean Gowan said “Since becoming a business professor many years ago, I have been inspired by the commitment and passion of Beta Alpha Psi students. I am especially proud of our JMU (Eta Delta) chapter. It is clearly one of the most engaged chapters I have seen and does a solid job of balancing learning about the profession and outreach. The Meet the Firms event continues to grow and serves as a critical link between the college and employers and alumni.”

Outside of academia, Dr. Gowan is an award winning amateur photographer having won ribbons in three different categories at the Rockingham County Fair over the past two years.
